\b0 The massif of the Vosges forms a barrier between Lorraine and Alsace and stretches
, from north to south, for a distance of 120 km (75 mls). Its highest point is the \i ballon\i0 of Guebwiller at an altitude of 1424 m (4672 ft). On the Lorraine side, it slopes gently upward from the west to the east and is covered in many places by a
thick mantle of fir and beech forest, which grows thinner at high altitudes. The Alsatian side is much more rugged, with sheer cliffs rising to over 1000 m (3200 feet) in places. It is also gashed by deep valleys.\par
